Under 17 International Soccer - World Cup - Trinidad and Tobago 2010

Congratulations to Ciara O'Brien (6th Year) and Jessica Gleeson (5th Year)

The participation of the Irish U/17s at the world cup in Trinidad and Tobago came to an end at the quarter final stage when they were beaten 2-1 by Japan. The Irish gave a tremendous display, full of skill and endeavour. They had much the better of the opening 15 minutes, with our own Jessica Gleeson (5th year) and Ciara O'Brien (6th year) doing very well. Japan played better as the half wore on and scored from the penalty spot with 15 minutes of the first half remaining.

The ‘Never say die' spirit of the Irish girls was much in evidence in the second half and they scored a much deserved equaliser mid-way through the half. The match was now very much in the balance and with both defences doing well chances were few for each side. With 10 minutes remaining, Japan scored what turned out to be the winner with a terrific shot from outside the penalty box.

Though very disappointed after the defeat to Japan, the Irish girls can justifiably be very proud of getting to the world cup and doing so well. All of us in St. Angela's School Waterford, students and teachers alike, are very proud indeed of the contribution that Jessica Gleeson and Ciara O'Brien have made to the marvellous success of the Irish squad.

Japan went on to beat North Korea, the defending champions, in the semi-final. The FIFA U/17 women's world cup came to a pulsating conclusion on Saturday last as South Korea beat Japan 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out, the last act in a thrilling final packed with goals and drama. Tied at 3-3 at the end of 90 minutes in which the lead and the initiative changed hands continually, the two sides battled to a standstill in extra-time, with the South Koreans holding their nerve from the spot to win the FIFA U/17 world cup.
